I was just comparing the architecture of the 3 places i've spent time as a researcher in past years. Check out buildings at ETH Honggerberg, Stanford CCSR, and RWTH-Aachen Uniklinik.....
ETH HONGGERBERG
STANFORD CCSR
RWTH UNIKLINIK
I went on to look at other institutions via wikipedia and noticed that there is definitely a trend across modern building design .....designs will incorporate either; HVAC considerations, low(zero) energy concepts or a "windows for all" concept.
As another example, I just got back from an interesting regional conference in Herne sponsored by the North-Rhein Westfalia stem cell network dealing with everything from making and controlling stem cells for making cell therapies to developing materials/surfaces for these cells.
The name of the center was the Mont Cenis Academy and it is very architecturally interesting and boasts a micro-climate envelope...have a look:

Enjoy!
